Team Armenia made an unsuccessful start at the 2026 Junior World Weightlifting Championships in Ismailia, Egypt. On the second day of the tournament, the first Armenian athlete took the platform — Artush Grigoryan in the men’s 65 kg weight category.
The 17-year-old Armenian weightlifter was two years younger than the main favorites, but he still hoped to deliver a respectable result. However, the day did not go Grigoryan’s way.
In the snatch, Artush successfully completed only one attempt, lifting 120 kg and finishing 15th. In the clean and jerk, he failed three times at 145 kg. As a result, the Armenian weightlifter finished without a total in the combined result.
Athletes from China took first and second places. At this point, the Chinese team has won all five gold medals at the world championships.
Results of the men’s 65 kg weight category
- Liqian Wang, China — 302 kg (138+164)
- Jinping Wang, China — 297 kg (132+165)
- Elsaeed Elaraby, Egypt — 291 kg (131+160)
On May 4, Narek Grigoryan and Hovhannes Hovhannisyan will compete for Team Armenia in the 71 kg weight category.
