Armenia Won 44 of 67 Bouts at the European U20 Championships: Full Record Against Every Country

Armenian freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers contested a total of 67 bouts at the 2026 European U20 Championships in Skopje. Armenia’s representatives recorded 44 victories and 23 defeats, giving them a winning percentage of 65.67%.

Armenia finished the tournament with two team awards. The Greco-Roman wrestling team placed second in the overall team standings, while the freestyle team earned the bronze medal.

Armenian wrestlers won ten medals in total: one gold, four silver and five bronze. Samvel Terteryan was Armenia’s only European champion, winning the Greco-Roman competition in the 77 kg weight category.

Samvel dominated the tournament, recording four victories by a combined score of 30-0.

Six of Armenia’s ten freestyle wrestlers reached the podium. Three more finished inside the top eight of their respective weight categories.

Four Armenian Greco-Roman wrestlers won medals, while seven of the ten participants finished inside the top seven.

Eight Bouts Against Azerbaijan and an Even Record

Armenian wrestlers faced representatives of Azerbaijan more often than any other country. The two national teams contested eight bouts, winning four each.

Two Armenian-Azerbaijani matchups took place in the Greco-Roman finals.

Samvel Terteryan defeated an Azerbaijani opponent in the decisive 77 kg bout to become Armenia’s only champion of the tournament. Edgar Petrosyan, meanwhile, lost to an Azerbaijani opponent in the 57 kg final and claimed the silver medal.

One of Armenia’s most memorable victories came in the freestyle competition. Narek Nikoghosyan faced Eljan Ismailzade in the 79 kg bronze-medal bout.

The Armenian wrestler trailed 2-10 after the first period but managed to execute a two-point move before pinning his opponent. Despite being well behind on points, Nikoghosyan secured an early victory by fall and became a European bronze medallist. The video of the bout can be viewed here.

Positive Record Against 16 Countries

In Skopje, Armenian wrestlers faced representatives of 23 countries. Armenia finished the tournament with a positive win-loss record against 16 national teams.

The records against Azerbaijan and Poland were even. Armenia had a negative record against five countries: Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, Finland and the Netherlands.

Armenian wrestlers did not lose a single bout against representatives of 11 countries: Hungary, Romania, Austria, Belgium, Israel, Estonia, Italy, Bulgaria, Portugal, Serbia and Sweden. Armenia recorded a total of 20 victories in those matchups.

The biggest unbeaten records were achieved against Romania and Bulgaria, with Armenia winning 3-0 against each country. Armenia also recorded notable positive results against Georgia, 4-2, and France, 3-1.

Turkey proved to be Armenia’s most difficult opponent, with Armenian wrestlers recording one victory and four defeats. Against Russia, Armenia won one of four bouts.
