Ararat-Armenia Lose to Sparta in Historic Europa League Match

Ararat-Armenia suffered a defeat against Sparta Prague in the opening round of the 2026/27 UEFA Europa League league phase. The historic match for Armenian football, played in Yerevan, ended 4-1 in favor of the visitors.

The game was particularly significant for Armenian football, as it marked the first time a club from Armenia had played a match in the main stage of the Europa League.

Interestingly, Sparta defeated Ararat-Armenia by the same 4-1 scoreline for the second year in a row. Last season, the Prague club recorded the same result in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers, and this time repeated it in the main stage of the Europa League.

Ararat-Armenia Could Have Opened the Scoring Early

Manuel Tulipa’s side made a very lively start and could have taken the lead after just 20 seconds. Artur Serobyan delivered a dangerous low cross from the wing, but Sandro Lima narrowly failed to make contact.

The hosts soon created another dangerous opportunity, which ended with the ball striking the post.

Ararat-Armenia had the better of the opening minutes, but the pattern of the match changed around the midway point of the first half. Sparta began to control possession more frequently in the opposition half and won a series of corners.

Set pieces became the Czech side’s main weapon. Norwegian centre-back Tobias Guddal scored twice following corners, finding the net in the 20th and 22nd minutes to give the visitors a two-goal advantage in a short spell.

The teams went into the break with Sparta leading 2-0.

Bruno Wilson Scores Historic Ararat-Armenia Goal

After the break, Ararat-Armenia tried to change the course of the match, but they conceded a third goal in the 53rd minute. John Mercado extended Sparta’s lead to three goals — 0-3.

The Armenian champions responded almost immediately.

In the 55th minute, Sandro Lima won a duel and laid the ball off to Bruno Wilson, who found the net for Ararat-Armenia — 1-3.

The goal became the Armenian club’s first-ever goal in the main stage of the Europa League.

After scoring, Tulipa’s team enjoyed a strong spell and threatened the visitors’ goal several times. The hosts attempted to reduce the deficit to one goal, but Sparta made better use of their opportunities.

In the 71st minute, substitute Patrik Vydra scored the Czech side’s fourth goal and set the final score at 4-1.

The final scoreline was more emphatic than the difference between the teams in terms of the quality of chances created.

Ararat-Armenia registered 13 shots and created three big chances. The Armenian club recorded an expected goals figure of 1.93 xG.

Sparta had 23 shots, five major goalscoring opportunities and 2.53 xG.

The Czech side were therefore significantly more efficient in converting their chances, while Ararat-Armenia failed to capitalize on several good opportunities in front of goal.

Artur Serobyan Was Ararat-Armenia’s Best Player

According to SofaScore, Artur Serobyan was Ararat-Armenia’s highest-rated player, receiving a score of 7.9.

The Armenia international winger spent 72 minutes on the pitch and was one of the hosts’ most active attacking players. Serobyan made five key passes and created one dangerous goalscoring opportunity.

It was his cross in the opening seconds of the match that gave Sandro Lima a chance to open the scoring. Throughout most of the game, Serobyan regularly created danger down his flank and caused problems for the Prague club’s defence.

Following the opening round, Ararat-Armenia will continue their campaign in the Europa League league phase.

Manuel Tulipa’s side will play their next European match on October 15 against Polish club Jagiellonia.

Sparta will face Norwegian side Lillestrøm in the next round.
