Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler Aramayis Harutyunyan (130 kg) has become the European champion among athletes under 23.
In the final of the 2026 European U23 Championship, held in the Serbian city of Zrenjanin, Harutyunyan faced three-time U20 European champion and U20 world champion Laszlo Darabos (Hungary). The bout ended 1:1, but according to additional criteria the victory was awarded to the Armenian wrestler, who won the tournament’s gold medal.
On his way to the final, Harutyunyan confidently defeated Leonard Junger (Austria) — 5:0, Alexander Melekhov (Russia) — 4:1, and Ivan Yankovsky (Ukraine) — 6:0.
For Aramais Harutyunyan, this is the first international medal of his career — and it is gold.
Thus, the Armenian national team already has three medals at the tournament — gold, silver and bronze. On Sunday the team has a chance to increase its medal tally: Suren Aghajanyan (60 kg) will compete in the final, while Armenian wrestlers will also fight for two more bronze medals.
