Alex Margaryan in the semifinals, two more Armenian wrestlers in medal contention

On August 23, the last four Armenian wrestlers began their campaign at the 2025 U20 Greco-Roman World Wrestling Championships in Bulgaria.

In the 63 kg category, Alex Margaryan delivered an impressive and dynamic performance to reach the semifinals. He scored two early wins against opponents from China and the USA, and in the quarterfinals, he defeated Iran’s Mohammad Aboutalebi 9:5 in a hard-fought bout. Today in the semifinal, Margaryan will face Bulgarian Kristiyan Milenkov.

In the 77 kg category, Samvel Terteryan also competed confidently. He first overcame European U20 vice-champion Davud Mammadov of Azerbaijan, then earned an early victory over a wrestler from Israel. In the quarterfinals, Terteryan narrowly lost 1:3 to two-time world U20 and U17 champion Zaur Beslekov. If Beslekov reaches the final, Samvel will likely get a chance to fight for bronze through the repechage.

In the 87 kg division, Erik Ter-Matevosyan opened with a dominant 9:0 win over his opponent from Kyrgyzstan. However, in the quarterfinals, he fell short in a tight 2:2 battle (on technical advantage) against reigning U20 European champion Luka Kochalidze of Georgia. Erik still remains in contention for the repechage round.

The semifinals will take place today at 18:00 Yerevan time. Also today, Gaspar Terteryan (72 kg), Samvel’s brother, will compete in the final.
