Armenian Anthem to Be Played in Azerbaijan as Janes Nazaryan Becomes Two-Time U17 World Champion

Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler Janes Nazaryan has won a gold medal at the U17 World Championships being held in Azerbaijan.

In the 71 kg final, Nazaryan defeated Russia’s Aslan Dzuev 4–3 to become a U17 world champion for the second time in his career.

The Armenian wrestler produced an impressive run on his way to the final, winning all of his preliminary bouts by technical superiority with a combined score of 34–0.

The decisive bout proved much more difficult. Nazaryan faced a European champion in the 65 kg weight category. He trailed 1–3 after the first period but managed to score from the par terre position in the second half of the match and complete a comeback victory.

Following the final, Nazaryan walked around the mat carrying the Armenian flag. Some spectators in Baku booed the Armenian athlete, but the officiating throughout the bout was fair and impartial.

Nazaryan’s gold is Armenia’s third medal at the 2026 U17 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships. The Armenian team has so far won one gold and two bronze medals.
