Armenia lead the world in matches without a clean sheet

The Armenia national football team continues an unpleasant run that has now become the longest among all national teams in the world.

Armenia last kept a clean sheet back in 2022. At that time, in the opening round of the UEFA Nations League, Joaquin Caparros’ team defeated the Republic of Ireland 1-0.

Since then, Armenia have played 38 matches, conceding at least one goal in each of them. During this period, the national team has changed several head coaches, but defensive problems have remained one of the most painful issues.

At the moment, the top three national teams with the longest active runs without a clean sheet are as follows:

1. Armenia — 38 matches
2. Tonga — 28 matches
3. Bahamas — 22 matches

Interestingly, Armenia’s closest European pursuer in this ranking is Moldova, with 13 matches. Egishe Melikyan’s team will face Moldova on June 9.

Before that, Armenia will play a friendly match against Kazakhstan on June 6. That game will give the team another chance to end the long run and keep their first clean sheet in almost four years.

It will not be easy. Armenia will be without two important defenders, Styopa Mkrtchyan and Sergey Muradyan, due to injuries. In addition, first-choice defensive midfielder Ugochukwu Iwu also remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from injury.

Against the backdrop of these squad problems, defensive reliability becomes an even more pressing issue. The main intrigue of the upcoming matches is whether Armenia can finally stop this unwanted run and keep their first clean sheet since 2022.
