Mkhitaryan explains why he decided to extend his Inter contract

Inter Milan’s Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has revealed what influenced his decision to continue playing for the Italian club. According to the player, the club’s management gave him no guarantees regarding playing time.

Ahead of the 2026/27 season, Mkhitaryan spoke to the renowned Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, discussing his new contract, his role in the team and the possibility of ending his professional career.

No guarantees from the club

Asked about his negotiations with Inter, the 37-year-old midfielder stressed that he had not been promised a place in the starting lineup.

“I was given no guarantees. That would not have been fair because I have to prove on the pitch whether I deserve a place in the team. At the same time, I feel that I can play at a high level for another season. That is why the club and I decided to continue together for one more year. Then we will see,” Mkhitaryan said.

A role model for young players

The Armenian midfielder also noted that his responsibilities within the squad remain unchanged. The experienced player intends to continue working with maximum commitment and helping his younger teammates.

“My role does not change. I always try to give my best in training and set an example for the others, especially the younger players,” he added.

No decision yet on retirement

Mkhitaryan did not rule out the possibility that the upcoming season could be the last of his professional career. However, he plans to make a final decision only after the campaign comes to an end.

“I don’t know,” the midfielder replied with a laugh. “It is impossible to say for certain right now. I need to wait until the end of the season and see how I feel. At my age, there is no point in making long-term plans.”

The former Armenia captain extended his agreement with Inter last month. Mkhitaryan’s new contract runs until the summer of 2027.
