Messi rewrites World Cup history again as Argentina lead Cape Verde at half-time

Argentina went into the half-time break in their 2026 World Cup Round of 32 match against Cape Verde with a 1-0 lead. The only goal of the first half was scored by Lionel Messi, who once again became the main figure for the reigning world champions.

Cape Verde started the match in an organized manner and for a long time managed to limit the Argentine captain’s freedom between the lines. But keeping Messi quiet for an entire half proved impossible. One moment was enough for the legendary forward to change the course of the game again.

The goal came in classic Messi fashion. Lisandro Martinez played a pass behind the defensive line, Messi timed his run perfectly, escaped his marker, brought the ball under control with a delicate first touch and then smashed his finish into the roof of the net.

This was Messi’s 20th goal in World Cup history. The Argentine became the first footballer ever to reach that mark at the global finals, extending his own tournament record.

Messi has also now scored his 7th goal at the 2026 World Cup and moved to the top of the Golden Boot race, one goal ahead of Kylian Mbappe. Even at the age of 39, Argentina’s captain continues to decide matches at the highest level.

For Cape Verde, the first half was a respectable one. The team defended with discipline, tried to deny Argentina space and for long spells succeeded in limiting Messi’s influence. But against a player of this class, losing concentration for just a few seconds can be enough.

After the first half, Argentina lead 1-0 and are 45 minutes away from reaching the Round of 16 at the World Cup.
