Mexico win their World Cup 2026 group early as Canada score six

Mexico have reached the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 and secured top spot in their group ahead of schedule. Javier Aguirre’s side defeated Korea Republic 1-0 in Guadalajara.

Luis Romo scored the only goal of the match. It proved decisive not only in the game itself, but also in the race for first place in the group: Mexico confirmed their place in the next round and will play their round-of-32 match in Mexico City.

One of the heroes of the match was Mexico goalkeeper Raul Rangel. Late in the game, he produced several outstanding saves, first denying Cho Guesung’s close-range header and then reacting instantly to stop Yang Hyunjun’s follow-up effort. Those saves allowed Mexico to protect their narrow lead and close out the victory.

Canada also enjoyed a memorable night. The tournament co-hosts scored six goals in Vancouver — twice as many as they had managed in their previous seven World Cup matches combined. Thanks to the emphatic win, Canada kept excellent chances of finishing first in their group: one point in the final round will be enough.

Switzerland also earned a convincing victory, finishing strongly against Bosnia and Herzegovina. South Africa, meanwhile, rescued a draw against Czechia with a late goal and kept their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.

As a result, Mexico have already completed their main task in the group, while Canada, Switzerland and South Africa continue their fight for places in the next round of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
