Lucas Zelarayán experienced a worrying episode during an Argentine Cup match, but the player did not require hospitalization.

On Thursday, Belgrano faced Gimnasia y Esgrima away from home in the Round of 32 of the Argentine Cup. In the 66th minute, the former Armenia national team player came on to replace an injured teammate, but only a few minutes later he himself had to leave the pitch.

During the match, Zelarayán suddenly felt unwell and began to lose coordination. The players were the first to come to the aid of Belgrano’s captain, after which an ambulance entered the field. Despite the alarming situation, Lucas was able to leave the stadium on his own feet, and hospitalization was not required.

After the match, Zelarayán told journalists that the cause of the incident was hypoglycemia — a condition in which the level of glucose in the blood drops below normal.

“I spoke a little with the doctor and the medical staff who examined me, and I am sincerely grateful to them. It was hypoglycemia: my glucose level was very low. I am not used to consuming much glucose; I was just talking about that with the doctors. My blood sugar dropped,” Zelarayán said.

The footballer admitted that what happened on the pitch upset him, as the episode caused serious concern among his family, teammates and Belgrano supporters.

“I am sorry and a little sad, because I did not like what happened on the field. It caused concern that my whole family and Belgrano fans went through,” Lucas noted.

Zelarayán also revealed that a similar incident had already happened to him last year during a vacation.

“Last year, during a vacation at home, the same thing happened to me: I had to rush to the doctor with my wife because I lost consciousness. I underwent a lot of tests with the club’s doctors. This week we will carry out the necessary examinations again.

Now I am returning with the team, and we will continue to analyze this. Many thanks to everyone for their concern,” added Belgrano’s captain.

The match itself ended with Belgrano’s victory in a penalty shootout. The team advanced to the Round of 16 of the Argentine Cup. Earlier, Belgrano also won the Argentine Apertura.
