Janes Nazaryan concedes no points and reaches U17 World Championship semifinals in Baku

U17 world and European champion Janes Nazaryan confidently advanced to the semifinals of the U17 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships in Baku.

The Armenian wrestler, competing in the 71 kg weight category, began his title defense with an early victory over an opponent from Norway. Nazaryan completed the bout 8–0 in just a minute and a half.

In the round of 16, Janes produced a spectacular throw and secured another early victory, defeating a Turkish wrestler 9–0 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Nazaryan once again prevented his opponent from scoring a single point in his next bout. In the quarterfinals, he defeated the Hungarian representative 9–0 and booked his place in the World Championship semifinals.

The Armenian wrestler therefore won all three of his bouts without conceding a point, scoring a total of 26 points while allowing his opponents none.

Janes Nazaryan will face Bulgaria’s Kristian Krastev for a place in the final.

The other Armenian wrestlers competing that day did not reach the semifinal stage. Vazgen Vardanyan (45 kg), Artush Petrosyan (60 kg) and European silver medalist Aleksan Shaljyan (92 kg) lost their opening bouts.

Gevorg Harutyunyan (51 kg) began the tournament with a convincing 9–0 victory over a Hungarian wrestler. However, he lost 4–6 to Azerbaijan’s Abdurrahman Huseynli in the quarterfinals. The bout featured controversial refereeing decisions that had a significant impact on the final result. Harutyunyan wrestled better than his opponent and was the only athlete to execute scoring throws.
