Belgium have reached the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after beating Senegal 3-2 in a dramatic match. The team were trailing 2-0 in the 86th minute, but managed to rescue the game late in regulation time before snatching victory in extra time.
Belgium continue their 2026 World Cup campaign. In one of the most dramatic knockout-stage matches of the tournament, the Belgians produced a remarkable comeback against Senegal and advanced to the next round.
Senegal looked close to victory after goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr. By the 86th minute, the African side were leading 2-0, leaving Belgium with only a few minutes to avoid elimination.
But the closing stages turned into a true football thriller. First, Romelu Lukaku brought Belgium back into the game, and then Youri Tielemans equalized to send the match into extra time.
The decisive moment came deep into extra time. In the 120+5th minute, Belgium were awarded a penalty, and captain Youri Tielemans converted it with ice-cold composure. The midfielder sent the ball into the top corner — Senegal goalkeeper Diaw went the wrong way, but even if he had guessed correctly, it would have been extremely difficult to keep it out.
Belgium won 3-2 and produced one of the most incredible comebacks of the 2026 World Cup.
