Australia recorded one of the most impressive victories of the opening round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Türkiye 2-0. The Group D match took place in Vancouver and turned into a real triumph for the young Socceroos.

The main heroes of the match were Nestory Irankunda, Connor Metcalfe and national team debutant Patrick Beach. They helped Australia secure a crucial win and keep a clean sheet against Vincenzo Montella’s side.

The scoring was opened in the 27th minute. Türkiye created a dangerous chance near the Australian goal, but Patrick Beach denied Arda Güler before Australia launched a lightning-fast counter-attack. Within seconds, the ball was moved to the other end of the pitch, where Irankunda cut inside and fired an unstoppable right-footed shot into the net.

For 22-year-old Beach, this was his debut match for the Australian national team. The coaching staff’s decision to start the young goalkeeper instead of the experienced Mat Ryan looked unexpected, but it fully paid off. Beach made eight saves and did not allow Türkiye to get back into the game.

After conceding, Türkiye increased the pressure. Beach tipped Abdulkerim Bardakcı’s powerful effort onto the post and then dealt with a strong free-kick from Arda Güler. Türkiye attacked frequently, but they were unable to break down Australia’s defence.

In the 75th minute, Australia sealed the victory. Connor Metcalfe won possession in midfield, drove forward and placed a superb left-footed shot into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.

After the match, Australia head coach Tony Popovic noted that the opening goal was especially important for the confidence of the young players. According to him, the team went through an emotionally demanding match and now must recover quickly before focusing on the game against the United States.

Nestory Irankunda, who was named Player of the Match, admitted that scoring for the national team was a special moment for him. He also said that Tim Cahill remains his biggest inspiration in Australian football.

Türkiye head coach Vincenzo Montella said his team created enough chances but failed to convert them. At the same time, he stressed that the battle in the group is not over yet.

After this victory, Australia earned three vital points and will now face Group D leaders the United States. The match will take place in Seattle and could become decisive in the race for first place. Türkiye, meanwhile, face a crucial match against Paraguay, where defeat could seriously complicate their chances of reaching the knockout stage.
