The 2026 U23 World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships concluded on October 15 in Las Vegas, USA. Armenia finished the tournament with two silver medals and placed sixth in the team standings, improving on its performance from the previous year.
Gaspar Terteryan (72 kg) and Martik Petrosyan (82 kg) claimed silver medals for Armenia. Both wrestlers delivered impressive performances throughout the competition but fell short in their respective finals.
Terteryan lost a closely contested final 4-3 to Kazakhstan's Yussuf Ashrapov. The result added another major international medal to the Armenian wrestler's collection. In 2025, Terteryan became the U20 world champion after defeating the same opponent, Ashrapov, in the final.
Petrosyan, meanwhile, recorded four victories on his way to the 82 kg final, where he suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against Iran's Abolfazl Mohammadi. The silver medal was Petrosyan's first podium finish at a tournament sanctioned by United World Wrestling (UWW).
Three other Armenian wrestlers narrowly missed out on medals. Yura Oveyan (67 kg), Samvel Terteryan (77 kg), and Aramayis Harutyunyan (130 kg) all finished fifth in their respective weight categories.
Harutyunyan's campaign was particularly dramatic. In the repechage rounds, he defeated opponents from Greece and Azerbaijan to earn an opportunity to compete for the bronze medal.
Iran Tops Team Standings as Armenia Improves Its Position
Iran won the overall team title with 119 points. Iranian wrestlers secured three gold medals, more than any other nation at the championships.
Kazakhstan finished second with 114 points and two gold medals, while Russia completed the top three with 105 points.
Wrestlers from Russia, Georgia, Belarus, Egypt, and China each claimed one gold medal.
Armenia finished sixth with 74 points, behind only Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.
For comparison, at the 2025 U23 World Championships, Armenian wrestlers also won two medals — one silver and one bronze — but finished seventh in the overall team standings.
Therefore, Armenia maintained its medal total in 2026 while improving the quality of its medals and moving up one position in the team rankings.

Compared to last year's championships, Armenia's national team made progress. The team climbed from seventh to sixth place in the overall standings, while both medals won in 2026 were silver.
However, three defeats in bronze-medal matches prevented Armenia from achieving an even better result. Nevertheless, the performances in Las Vegas confirmed that Armenia remains competitive at the U23 level and has wrestlers capable of challenging for medals at major international championships.
