On September 16, in Zagreb (Croatia), the 2025 World Championships in freestyle wrestling came to an end. On the final day of the tournament, medals were contested in two weight categories — 65 kg and 97 kg.
In the 65 kg weight class, the world champion became 23-year-old Iranian Rahman Amouzadkhalili, who claimed his second world gold. In the final, he defeated Japan’s Kotaro Kiyoka by technical superiority and avenged his loss from the decisive bout at the 2024 Olympic Games.
In the 97 kg weight category, 29-year-old American Kyle Snyder claimed victory, becoming a four-time world champion. His first title came exactly 10 years ago, in 2015, followed by triumphs in 2017, 2022, and now in 2025.
As a result, Team USA won three gold medals: Zahid Valencia, Trent Hidlay, and Kyle Snyder became champions. However, in the team standings, Iran came out on top with two champions but more silver and bronze medalists. Russian wrestlers won one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal. Russia’s only champion was Zaur Uguev (61 kg).
In total, wrestlers from six countries won world titles: USA (3), Iran (2), Japan (2), Russia (1), DPRK (1), and Greece (1). Greek wrestler Georgios Kougioumtzidis (79 kg) secured the first-ever world championship gold medal in freestyle wrestling for his country.
Team Armenia managed to earn only one medal — a bronze won by Arsen Harutyunyan (57 kg). Armenia finished 14th in the team rankings.
