Armenian Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship Concludes in Charentsavan

On December 23, the Armenian Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship concluded in Charentsavan. The national championship was of particular importance, as it served as a qualifying tournament for the 2026 European Championship, as well as for the European U23 Wrestling Championship.

The main highlight of the tournament was the historic achievement of brothers Samvel and Gaspar Terteryan. Both athletes, members of Armenia’s youth national team, won national championship titles for the first time in their careers, a rare and remarkable event in Armenian wrestling.

Several leaders of the senior national team confirmed their high level by successfully defending their championship titles. Victories in their respective weight categories were claimed by Manvel Khachatryan (55 kg), Karen Aslanyan (63 kg), and Samvel Grigoryan (82 kg).

At the same time, the tournament produced several unexpected results. In the 130 kg weight category, current Armenian national team wrestler Razmik Kurdyan was defeated by Albert Vardanyan. In the 87 kg category, Vigen Nazaryan lost to Gevorg Tadevosyan—both athletes also represent the national team.

Special attention should be given to the 63 kg category, where two senior national team wrestlers—Karen Aslanyan and Hrachya Poghosyan—faced each other. Poghosyan usually competes in the 60 kg category, but managed to win the silver medal, losing only to Aslanyan.
