31-year-old sabre fencer Yana Egoryan, born in Tbilisi and competing for the Russian national team under a neutral flag, became a three-time world champion in fencing. The tournament is being held in the Georgian capital from July 22 to 30, 2025.
In the decisive bout, Egoryan defeated Polish fencer Zuzanna Cieślar 15:11. On her way to the final, the two-time Rio 2016 Olympic champion confidently overcame China’s Pan Qimiao (15:8). In the other semifinal, Cieślar defeated Ukraine’s Alina Komashchuk.
This victory earned Yana Egoryan her third World Championship gold medal; she had previously topped the podium in 2015 and 2019.
The World Championships in Tbilisi became the first since 2019 where Russian fencers are represented in full, although they continue to compete under neutral status.
