Armenian weightlifter Varazdat Lalayan has been nominated for the "AIPS Best European Weightlifter 2024" award. This is a new award that will be presented for the first time this year. The award ceremony will take place on April 13, 2025, in Chișinău, Moldova, as part of the opening of the European Weightlifting Championship.
In 2024, Varazdat Lalayan became the European champion, world champion, and silver medalist at the Olympic Games.
The nominees for the award are: Karlos Nasar (Bulgaria), Lasha Talakhadze (Georgia), Dadash Dadashbayli (Azerbaijan), Yunus Gench (Turkey), Oscar Reyes (Italy), Marcos Velasquez (Spain), Yevgeny Tikhantsov (Belarus), Roberto Gutu (Germany), Marin Robu (Moldova), and Varazdat Lalayan (Armenia).
The main favorite to win the award is Bulgarian Karlos Nasar, who won all tournaments in 2024, including the Olympic Games, and set a new world record in the 89 kg weight category.
