The captain of the Armenian national team, Varazdat Haroyan, has decided to end his career with the squad. The 32-year-old defender announced his decision through Fast Sports insider and commentator Suren Meliksetyan.
Haroyan said he played 92 matches for the national team, experiencing both joyful and difficult moments. He emphasized his dedication and love for the national side, stating that he was always ready to help and played wholeheartedly for his homeland.
The main reason for his retirement from the national team, according to Haroyan, is his unwillingness to work with new head coach Yeghishe Melikyan. The defender noted that he had previously worked with Melikyan without success and saw no point in trying again.
Varazdat Haroyan’s statement:
“I want to announce that I have decided to end my career with the Armenian national team. I played 92 matches for the national team during both the happiest and most difficult times. I was always ready to stand by the team. I think there is no need to talk about my dedication and patriotism — you have seen it both on and off the field.
During my career, the national team gave me a lot. In return, I gave everything to the same team for 15 years. I played with all my heart for my people. Now it’s time to say goodbye.
I will also share the reason, as I have nothing to hide. Once, I already tried working with our new head coach — it didn’t work out. I don’t want to try again because it still won’t work. I don’t even have the desire to try.
I thank everyone for their trust over the years. I wish success to my national team. I will always be with you in spirit and heart.”
Earlier, Haroyan had also left FC Pyunik due to disagreements with Melikyan. The coach himself stated in an interview that there was no conflict, but that his decision not to call up the defender was due to differences in playing style.

Are there defenders in Armenia who can replace Varazdat Haroyan?
