Armenia’s national wrestling team will maintain stability in its coaching staff, announced the press secretary of the Wrestling Federation of Armenia, Araik Baghdadyan, in an Armenpress podcast. The head coaches of the national teams will remain Armen Babalaryan (Greco-Roman wrestling) and Abetnak Kurginyan (freestyle wrestling).
Baghdadyan emphasized that one of the main challenges for the development of wrestling in the country is the lack of competition among wrestlers aged 18-23. He attributed this issue to the complex system of military service deferments, as only one or two athletes per weight category receive a deferment. However, there are cases where a talented wrestler does not have enough time to reach their full potential before the draft age and is forced to interrupt their sports career.
According to the federation’s representative, introducing a deferment system for all athletes could be an important step in the development of wrestling in Armenia. This would allow more promising wrestlers to continue training and represent the country in international competitions.
Araik Baghdadyan noted that the federation expected more medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics but is nevertheless satisfied with the team’s progress.
