Construction work on the sports complex named after Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling champion Arthur Aleksanyan has officially resumed in Gyumri. The ceremonial relaunch of the project was attended by Armenia’s Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Khachatryan, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan, Shirak Governor Davit Arushanyan, representatives of state institutions, athletes, and Arthur Aleksanyan himself.

The future complex is expected to become one of the largest specialized sports facilities in Armenia. The project includes the creation of modern infrastructure for youth sports development and the hosting of international-level competitions. The complex will feature large training and competition halls for wrestling, martial arts and team sports, a football field, an athletics track, a swimming pool, accommodation facilities for athletes, and other essential infrastructure.

According to Tigran Khachatryan, the project has been revised to take into account technical construction requirements and quality standards. He stressed that the future sports school must meet the highest international standards and become a center of sporting life not only for young wrestlers following in Arthur Aleksanyan’s footsteps but also for athletes from various sports disciplines.

Minister Zhanna Andreasyan announced that a new contractor has been engaged to complete the construction. Under the current plan, all works are expected to be finished within two years. She noted that the complex will be a unique facility for Armenia, capable of hosting not only national competitions but also major international tournaments, including European and World Championships.

“This project creates a unique opportunity to transform Gyumri into one of the country’s leading sports hubs. At the same time, it will open new prospects for the development of youth sports and encourage children to engage in regular physical activity,” the minister emphasized.

Arthur Aleksanyan expressed confidence that the infrastructure of the complex will fully meet the highest international standards. The Olympic champion stated that he is ready to share his experience and knowledge so that the new sports center can become a training ground for future champions and help increase young people’s interest in sports.

It is worth noting that the development of modern sports infrastructure remains one of Armenia’s key state priorities. In recent years, projects have also been launched for the construction of the Malkhas and Roman Amoyan Sports School, a new building for the Albert Azaryan Sports School in Yerevan, and the Arthur Abraham Sports School named after the former world boxing champion.
