Three Armenian wrestlers reach finals at European U20 Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships

The 2026 European U20 Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships kicked off in Skopje on July 6. Five members of the Armenian national team competed on the opening day, and three of them managed to reach the finals.

Edgar Petrosyan advanced to the final in the 55 kg category, Alex Margaryan reached the final at 63 kg, and Samvel Terteryan made it to the gold-medal bout at 77 kg. All three Armenian wrestlers won their semifinal matches and will continue the fight for gold medals.

Edgar Petrosyan had a dominant opening day. The Armenian wrestler won all three of his bouts by technical superiority and did not concede a single point.

In the round of 16, Petrosyan defeated Portugal’s Alessandre De Almeida 8:0. He then beat Sos Kotanjyan of France 9:0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal, Edgar once again won without conceding, defeating Romania’s Vlad Trip 8:0.

In the final, Petrosyan will face Emin Javadli of Azerbaijan.

Alex Margaryan will also fight for gold

Alex Margaryan reached the final in the 63 kg category. He began the tournament with a hard-fought 2:1 win over Salim Kazmakhov of Russia and then confidently overcame his next opponents.

In the round of 16, Margaryan defeated France’s Illes Dahmani 5:0, before beating Dmitry Duduk of Belarus 9:0 in the quarterfinals by technical superiority. In the semifinal, the Armenian wrestler defeated Greece’s Marios Kapantais 10:5.

Margaryan will face Maksym Sultanov of Ukraine in the final.

Samvel Terteryan confidently reaches the 77 kg final

Another finalist for Armenia is Samvel Terteryan. In the 77 kg category, he recorded three convincing wins by technical superiority and also did not allow his opponents to score a single point.

In the round of 16, Terteryan defeated Austria’s Lars Matt 9:0. He then beat Nichita Apostol of Moldova by the same score in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal, the Armenian wrestler defeated Sweden’s Ruben Straakeved 8:0.

In the final, Terteryan will face Javidan Nakhmatov of Azerbaijan.

Yurik Petrosyan to fight for bronze, Leva Shukhyan eliminated

Two more Armenian wrestlers were unable to advance further through the main bracket.

In the 87 kg category, Yurik Petrosyan lost 1:3 to Mikhail Shkarin of Russia in the round of 16. However, the Armenian wrestler received a chance to fight for a bronze medal through the repechage, as Shkarin reached the final.

In the heavyweight 130 kg category, Leva Shukhyan lost 1:2 to Musey Huseyn of Azerbaijan in the quarterfinals and ended his run at the tournament.

Thus, Armenia finished the opening day of the European U20 Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships with three finalists. Armenian wrestlers won all three semifinal bouts and secured at least three silver medals.
