U.S. President Donald Trump responded to FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s statement that Iran’s national team will take part in the 2026 World Cup and play its matches on U.S. soil.
During a conversation with journalists, Trump was asked how he felt about the Iranian team playing in the tournament in the United States. The American leader replied that he trusted the FIFA president’s position.
“If Gianni said so, then I have no objection,” Trump said.
At the same time, the U.S. president, in his characteristic manner, added an ironic comment about the sporting level of the Iranian national team:
“Do they have a good team? Frankly, that’s hard to believe.”
Earlier, Gianni Infantino officially confirmed that Iran would not be excluded from the list of participants in the 2026 World Cup and would play in the United States despite political tensions and discussions about a possible relocation of matches. According to Reuters, the FIFA head emphasized that football should unite people rather than become part of a political confrontation.
Iran’s national team will play in Group G, where its opponents will be Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. The Iranian team is scheduled to play its group-stage matches in Los Angeles and Seattle.
