London's Tottenham have won the UEFA Europa League, defeating fellow English giants Manchester United 1–0 in the final. The only goal of the match was scored in the 42nd minute by Welsh forward Brennan Johnson.
The final took place on May 21 at the San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao. This is Spurs' first European trophy since 1984 and their first piece of silverware of any kind since 2008 — ending a 17-year drought.
One of the heroes of the final was Dutch defender Micky van de Ven, who made an acrobatic goal-line clearance to prevent a certain goal.
Despite a disappointing Premier League season, where Tottenham sit just 17th after 37 rounds, their Europa League triumph secures them a spot in next season’s Champions League.
For Spurs captain Son Heung-min, this is the first trophy of his professional career. Interestingly, in the same year, Tottenham’s former talisman Harry Kane also claimed his first title — winning the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.
