USA beat Australia and reach World Cup 2026 playoffs from first place in Group D

The United States national team claimed its second straight win at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and secured an early place in the playoffs.

In the second round of Group D, the American team defeated Australia 2-0 in Seattle. Türkiye and Paraguay also play in this group.

The USA started the match aggressively and decided the outcome in the first half. First, Cameron Burgess turned the ball into his own net after a low cross from Folarin Balogun. Then Alex Freeman headed in from close range after a deflection from Sergino Dest’s shot.

After the break, Australia improved and tried to get back into the match, but the United States held on to its advantage and closed out the win.

Thanks to this result, the Americans moved to six points after two rounds and guaranteed first place in Group D. The USA advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.

For the United States, this is only the second time in history that the team has started a World Cup with two straight victories.

Australia head coach Tony Popovic admitted after the match that his team had failed in the first half.

“I don’t know if it was the occasion, but we looked sluggish and heavy-legged. They were more powerful and won almost every second ball. Then we conceded two sloppy goals. The reaction in the second half was outstanding, and the players showed how good they are. But the first half was tough, both mentally and physically,” Popovic said.

After the defeat, Australia will continue its fight for a place in the playoffs in the final round of the group stage.
