Starting January 1, 2026, the mandatory military service term in Armenia will be reduced from two years to one and a half. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced the decision in a Telegram post, noting that the Minister of Defense, after consultations with MPs, presented the relevant legislative initiative.
“Initially, it was planned for the law to take effect with the summer 2026 draft, but it was decided to begin with the winter one — from January 1, 2026,” Pashinyan said.
The reform is especially significant for the country’s sports sector, particularly football. Young athletes who are not granted deferment will now be able to return to training and competition sooner.
The change will be most noticeable for players of BKMA Yerevan, a football club where conscripted players traditionally serve. Currently, they spend two years there on loan and only return to their teams after completing service, which often hinders their development and potential transfers abroad.
Now, Armenian footballers will complete their service six months earlier, opening more opportunities for professional growth and continuation of their sports careers.
The shorter service term could also benefit national teams, as more young athletes will be able to return to full training and participate in international competitions on time.
