Shirak have recorded their first victory of the new Armenian championship season. In the third round, Vardan Bichakhchyan’s side earned a 1–0 away win over Gandzasar.
The only goal of the match was scored by 21-year-old midfielder Vazgen Sargsyan. It was his first goal of the current season and proved enough to secure three long-awaited points for Shirak.
Interestingly, this was already the second Armenian Premier League goal for the namesake of the great Armenian national hero — and both of Sargsyan’s goals have come against Gandzasar. Moreover, both were scored at Estadio Junior.
Now we are waiting for Vazgen Sargsyan’s first goal at the Republican Stadium named after his famous namesake. His next opportunity should come on October 16, when Shirak are due to face Ararat there.
The victory was particularly special for the Gyumri club: Shirak and their supporters had waited 265 days for a winning match.
Today, that wait finally came to an end.
Not even the weather could stop them. Kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes because of heavy rain, but once the game got underway, Shirak managed to achieve what mattered most — victory.
