Today, on March 7, the MEN’S EUROLAX SIXES CUP 2025 tournament kicked off in Portugal. Six national teams are participating: Armenia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and France.
Lacrosse is a team sport played with a ball and sticks, where players aim to score by shooting the ball into the opponent’s goal. The game originated among the Indigenous peoples of North America and has since gained global popularity.
Lacrosse will be featured at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. A new format, Lacrosse Sixes, was specially developed for this purpose, featuring six players per team on the field. The tournament in Portugal is the first competition in this format, serving as the starting point for the Olympic qualification cycle.
The Armenian national team is composed of players competing in the United States.
In the opening matches, Armenia secured two victories:
Armenia - Portugal 15:11
Armenia - Switzerland 15:13
The President of the Armenian Lacrosse Federation, John Muradian, emphasized the significance of the tournament in Portugal:
"The Eurolax SIXES tournament in Portugal will be our second international tournament in the SIXES format, and we are excited to welcome eight new players. The more players gain experience in this format, the better prepared we will be for the SIXES qualifying tournaments starting in 2026. The inclusion of lacrosse in the 2028 Olympic Games program gives us a chance to build a strong team for future competitions."
Previously, the Armenian national team participated in the Second Annual Balkan Lacrosse Festival in Greece, where they finished as runners-up after a 19-21 loss to the Netherlands in the final. Now, the team continues preparing for the upcoming matches of the Eurolax SIXES CUP 2025 in Portugal, aiming to reach the playoffs and compete for medals.
