Russian anthem played at an IWF tournament for the first time in five years after Plotnikov’s victory

The third competition day of the 2026 IWF Youth World Weightlifting Championships U17 took place on July 8 in Cali, Colombia.

On this day, medals were awarded in two weight categories: boys’ 65 kg and girls’ 58 kg. Sergey Plotnikov of Russia and Nicoleta Cojocaru of Moldova won the total in their respective events.

The battle in the boys’ 65 kg category proved especially intense. Sergey Plotnikov lost one kilogram to David Linares of Venezuela in the snatch, but managed to make up the difference in the clean and jerk and win the total with 275 kg. Linares finished second, just one kilogram behind the winner.

After Plotnikov’s victory, the Russian national anthem was played at an International Weightlifting Federation competition for the first time in five years.
