Russian Wrestlers to Compete in an International Tournament in Armenia

Russia’s U20 freestyle wrestling team will take part in an international tournament in Armenia, scheduled to be held from March 16 to 19. This was reported by senior national team coach Zelimkhan Guseinov in an interview with a WRESTRUS.RU correspondent.

The team includes athletes selected based on the results of the Russian U20 Championship held in Vladikavkaz. The upcoming tournament will serve as one of the preparation stages for the European Championship and will allow the coaching staff to assess the wrestlers’ current form.

“I think overall, yes. We have three training camps ahead of us to prepare for the European Championship and two international tournaments. The first will take place on March 16–19 in Armenia, and the second on April 17–19 in Turkey. During the training camps we will evaluate the condition of the athletes, and after the tournaments in Armenia and Turkey we will finalize the team roster for the European Championship. I believe we should perform well,” Guseinov noted.

According to preliminary information, the event may be the traditional Lyova Vardanyan International Freestyle Wrestling Tournament, which is annually held in Yerevan in March. Last year, the competition took place at the end of the month among U23 athletes, and the Russian team did not participate. There has been no official confirmation yet regarding the format and status of the upcoming tournament.

The 2026 U20 European Championship will be held in North Macedonia from July 6 to 12.
