Portugal’s national team head coach Roberto Martínez shared his expectations for the opening games of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. His team will face Armenia in Yerevan on September 6, and then travel to Budapest on September 9 for a clash with Hungary.
— “The qualifying format leaves us no room for mistakes. We must respect our opponents: Armenia will take the field with the support of their fans and a new coach, while Hungary is known for their stability and strong home performance. I believe Hungary will be our toughest challenge at this stage,” Martínez noted (source: Record).
The coach paid special attention to the emotional aspect of preparation. For the first time, the team has gathered without forward Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in July.
— “We must be ready tactically and physically, but psychology now plays a huge role as well. Diogo’s absence will become a source of unity and extra motivation for us,” he emphasized.
The number 21 shirt, previously worn by Jota, has now been given to midfielder Rúben Neves. According to Martínez, this decision was made with the family’s consent, as Neves was one of Jota’s closest friends in the squad.
The Portuguese Football Federation published the squad list for the September matches, once again including all the team leaders, among them Cristiano Ronaldo.
