The penultimate round of the 2026 World Cup European qualification took place across five groups. The matchday brought important developments in the race for direct World Cup spots and playoff positions.
Key events of the round
Spain confidently secured first place in their group with a big win over Georgia. Turkey remains second, but can no longer catch Spain due to goal difference. Georgia lost all chances of fighting for second place.
In Group H, Romania also lost the opportunity to rise to second place but secured a spot in the Nations League playoffs. At the same time, Romania couldn’t help Moldova obtain a playoff berth. Moldova could have earned a Nations League playoff spot if Romania had qualified directly from the group. Bosnia and Herzegovina secured the playoffs and will fight Austria for first place in the decisive final match.
Switzerland qualified early for the 2026 World Cup. Kosovo is second and has also secured a playoff spot. Even though Kosovo still can catch the leader on points, their goal difference won’t allow them to fight for first place.
In Group C, Denmark failed to strengthen their top position after a draw with Belarus. Scotland, despite losing to Greece, still has a chance to finish first — they must beat Denmark in the final round.
