Real Sociedad Wins the Spanish Cup — 2026
On April 18, the final of the 2026 Spanish Cup took place, where Real Sociedad faced Atlético Madrid. Regular and extra time ended in an exciting 2–2 draw, and the fate of the trophy was decided in a penalty shootout.
In the post-match lottery, the Basques proved stronger — 4–3. The hero of the shootout was goalkeeper Unai Morrero, who saved two shots and secured victory for his team.
For Real Sociedad, this trophy became the fourth in the club’s history. The last time the team won the Spanish Cup was five years ago — in 2021.
Interestingly, three of the four trophies won by the Basque side were secured in dramatic battles that ended in penalty shootouts. These victories came in 1987 and 2026 (both on penalties), as well as in 2021, when the team won in regular time.
This success became an important chapter in the club’s modern history and confirmed Real Sociedad’s status as one of the strongest teams in Spain.
