A manageable first round and a tough Debrecen: what awaits Pyunik in the Conference League

Yerevan’s Pyunik will begin their 2026/27 European campaign in the first qualifying round of the Conference League. The team finished third in the Armenian Premier League last season and earned the right to return to the international stage.
Pyunik’s first opponent will be Malta’s Marsaxlokk, who also finished third in their domestic league last season.
On paper, the draw can be considered a favorable one for the Armenian club. Pyunik look like the clear favorites in the tie, but the Maltese side should not be underestimated. Marsaxlokk are a fairly experienced team with a large number of foreign players and an older squad.
Marsaxlokk are a solid and experienced team
Marsaxlokk represent the Maltese championship. The team finished third last season and earned a place in the Conference League qualifiers.
The total transfer value of the Maltese club’s squad is €3.4 million. The team has 14 foreign players, while the average age of the squad is 29.2. This shows that Marsaxlokk rely heavily on experienced footballers.
At the same time, the team does not have many players with national team experience. Three players have been called up to national teams: two for Malta and one for Lithuania.
This summer, the team has already lost forward James Kirby, who scored two goals last season.

Joseph Minala deserves special attention. He once belonged to Italian club Lazio and now plays in the Maltese championship.
Marsaxlokk’s top scorer last season was Dodô, who scored 13 goals.
Marsaxlokk’s European experience
Marsaxlokk do not yet have a significant European history. The team has never previously progressed beyond the first qualifying round.
The last time the Maltese club played in European competition was in the 2024/25 season. Back then, Marsaxlokk faced Albanian side Partizani and lost over two legs.
The results of the tie:

For Pyunik, this is an important indicator. The Maltese club have experience in qualifying rounds, but they have not yet achieved success at this level.
Pyunik are the favorites in the first round
Pyunik should be considered the clear favorites in the tie. The Yerevan club have more European experience, a higher status and a stronger squad.
However, the first round should not be treated as a formality. Maltese clubs have become more competitive in recent years, and Marsaxlokk have an experienced team. It is especially important that the core of the opponent’s squad is made up of mature players who may be well prepared for result-oriented matches.
Pyunik’s main task is to get through the first round calmly and avoid underestimating the opponent. In terms of squad quality and European experience, the Armenian club are expected to progress.
Debrecen may await in the second round
If Pyunik get past Marsaxlokk, they will face Hungarian side Debrecen in the second qualifying round of the Conference League.
This is already an opponent of a different level. Debrecen finished fourth in the Hungarian championship and have a more expensive squad. The team’s total transfer value is €10.18 million, while Pyunik’s squad is valued at €6.15 million.
The Hungarian club have 12 foreign players in their squad. Nine players have been called up to national teams: six for Hungary, and one each for Nigeria, the Central African Republic and Venezuela.
Debrecen have lost important players
At first glance, Debrecen look like a very serious opponent for Pyunik. However, this summer the team has already lost several important players.
The top five most valuable players in the squad are:
Tamás Juhász, central midfielder, Hungary — €1.5 million,
Donát Bárány, centre-forward, Hungary — €800,000,
Patrik Demjén, goalkeeper, Hungary — €600,000,
Soma Szuhodovszki, central midfielder, Hungary — €500,000,
Djordje Gordic, central midfielder, Serbia — €50,000.
At the same time, some of these players have already left the team. Debrecen have lost several important members of the squad, including Tamás Juhász, Patrik Demjén, Soma Szuhodovszki and Djordje Gordic.
Overall, five significant players have left the team. The club has already signed four newcomers to replace them. Among them, Blaž Bošković from Croatia, valued at €600,000, and Rotem Keller from Israel, valued at €400,000, stand out.
In other words, Debrecen remain a strong team, but they are approaching the European campaign while undergoing a squad rebuild.
Debrecen’s European experience
Debrecen are a club with a rich European history. The team’s best achievement was reaching the UEFA Champions League group stage in the 2009/10 season.
The last time the Hungarian club played in European competition was in the 2023/24 season. Back then, Debrecen had already faced an Armenian team — they eliminated Alashkert in the Conference League qualifiers.
Debrecen’s path in the 2023/24 season:
Conference League 2nd round: Alashkert — 1:0, 1:2, 2:2 on aggregate, 3:1 win on penalties,
Conference League 3rd round: Rapid Vienna — 0:5, 0:0, 0:5 on aggregate.
Against Alashkert, the Hungarian club advanced only after a penalty shootout. This shows that Debrecen are not an impossible opponent for Armenian teams. At the same time, the overall level of their squad and the strength of the Hungarian league make them a very serious test.
Conclusion
Pyunik’s draw in the first round of the Conference League can be considered favorable. Marsaxlokk are an experienced and solid team, but the Yerevan club are clearly superior in terms of European experience and squad level.
Pyunik’s main task is to get through the first round without unnecessary problems. The Maltese club should not be underestimated, but in this tie the Armenian team should be considered the clear favorite.
The situation will be much more difficult in the second round. A potential meeting with Debrecen would be a real test for Pyunik. The Hungarian club have a more expensive squad, serious European experience and represent a stronger league. However, summer changes and the loss of several important players may work in favor of the Armenian club. In addition, the Armenian team are preparing seriously for the new season. Pyunik have gone to Slovenia for a training camp and have already signed several new players: midfielder Hovhannes Harutyunyan and forward Iasonas Pikis.
Pyunik’s Conference League journey begins with a manageable opponent, but the very next round could become the first major test of the new European season for the Yerevan side.
