Noah vs Zimbru: what to know about the Yerevan club’s Conference League opponent

Noah vs Zimbru: what to know about the Yerevan club’s Conference League opponent
Football Exclusive

Yerevan’s Noah will begin their 2026/27 European campaign in the second qualifying round of the Conference League. The team earned this right as the winner of the Armenian Cup.

Last season, Noah made history: the Yerevan club became the first Armenian representative to reach the play-offs of the main stage of the Conference League. Now the team will try to qualify for the league phase of a European competition again.

However, doing so will be more difficult than last season. Back then, Noah started their journey in the Champions League and had the opportunity to continue in other competitions after elimination. This time, the team starts directly in the Conference League, so the margin for error will be smaller.

Noah’s first opponent will be Moldova’s Zimbru. On paper, this is a fairly manageable draw for the Armenian club.

Zimbru finished third in the Moldovan championship

Zimbru finished last season in third place in the Moldovan championship. The team earned the right to play in the Conference League qualifiers, but in terms of squad level and current situation, they do not look like an opponent Noah should fear.

The total transfer value of Zimbru’s squad is €4.94 million. The team has a large number of foreign players — 22 footballers, which represents 71% of the squad.

At the same time, the Moldovan club does not have many players with national team experience. Two players have been called up to the Moldova national team, while one more has represented Curaçao. However, the Curaçao player was not called up for the 2026 World Cup.

Zimbru’s most valuable players

The top five most valuable players in the Moldovan club’s squad are:

  • Vladimir Fratea, right winger, Moldova — €400,000;
  • Matteo Amoroso, attacking midfielder, Brazil — €400,000;
  • Mihail Stefan, centre-back, Moldova — €300,000;
  • Timofey Sharkovsky, right winger, Belarus — €300,000;
  • Abou Dosso, left-back, Ivory Coast — €275,000.

At first glance, Zimbru have a fairly broad foreign-player core, but in terms of individual quality and squad depth, the team is inferior to Noah.

Zimbru have lost their attacking leaders

Zimbru’s main problem ahead of the European qualifiers is the serious losses in their attacking line.

The team’s top scorer last season was Denis Kozlovskiy, who scored 23 goals in 33 matches. However, he has already left the club.

In addition, the team’s most valuable player, Vladimir Fratea, is also leaving in the summer of 2026. Last season, he was one of Zimbru’s key players, recording 8 goals and 13 assists.

As a result, the Moldovan club approaches the European campaign without two of its most important attacking players. For Noah, this is a significant factor: the opponent is not simply losing rotation players, but footballers who directly influenced results.

Evgeniy Kochuk is a familiar name for Armenian fans

One of Zimbru’s new signings is Evgeniy Kochuk. This player is well known to Armenian fans, as he previously played for Pyunik.

Kochuk can add experience and quality to Zimbru’s midfield, but even with his arrival, the Moldovan team still does not look like an opponent that should be considered the favourite against Noah. The Moldovan club has not made any other transfers so far.

Zimbru’s European experience

Zimbru have a European history, but in recent years the team has not achieved serious results on the international stage.

The Moldovan club’s best European result was reaching the Europa League qualifying play-off round in the 2014/15 season. Back then, Zimbru came close to reaching the group stage but stopped in the final qualifying round.

Zimbru last played in European competition in the 20245/26 season. In the second qualifying round of the Conference League, the Moldovan club faced Kazakhstan’s Astana and lost on aggregate. The first match ended in a 2-0 defeat for Zimbru, while the return leg finished in a 1-1 draw.

This experience shows that Zimbru are capable of competing at Conference League qualifying level, but against more organised and experienced opponents, the team usually lacks consistency. For Noah, this is an important point of reference: the Moldovan club must not be underestimated, but in terms of European status, the Yerevan side currently look stronger.

Noah are clear favourites, but there is an important nuance

Overall, Noah should be considered the clear favourites in this tie. The Yerevan club have a higher European status after last year’s historic season, more international experience and more serious ambitions.

However, there is one important nuance at the moment: it is still unclear what squad Noah will have for the matches against Zimbru.

Since the end of the season, eight players have already left the team. It is especially important that all nominal strikers have departed. New signings will, of course, still arrive, but at the moment the club has not announced any new attacking players.

This makes the preparation for the European campaign especially important. Noah are holding a training camp in Slovenia, where the coaching staff must prepare the team for the new season and integrate future newcomers into the playing model.

Why it will be harder for Noah than last season

At first glance, Noah have a fairly convenient opponent. But the format of their European path has become less comfortable.

Last season, the Yerevan club started in the Champions League. That gave them additional opportunities: even after elimination, the team could continue competing in another tournament.

Now Noah start directly in the Conference League. Therefore, every mistake will be more costly. To reach the league phase again, the team must get past opponents without the right to any serious setbacks.

The tie against Zimbru looks like a good opportunity for a successful start. But for that to happen, Noah must solve their squad issues, especially in attack.

Conclusion

Overall, the draw can be considered favourable for Noah. Zimbru are a solid Moldovan club with a large number of foreign players, but the team has lost its best attacking players and does not look like an opponent that should be considered the favourite against the Yerevan side. In addition, two years ago Zimbru lost both matches to Ararat-Armenia — 0-3 and 1-3.

Noah enter the European campaign as a team that has already proven its quality on the international stage. Last season’s historic run raised expectations, and now the Yerevan club will once again be expected to reach the league phase of the Conference League.

The main question is the squad. If Noah quickly solve their problem positions, especially in attack, and approach the matches in optimal condition, the tie against Zimbru should be manageable for the Armenian club.
