The reigning Polish Cup holders, Legia Warsaw, ended their title defense early, being eliminated in the Round of 32 after losing to Pogoń Szczecin — the very team they defeated in last season’s final.
This time, luck was on Pogoń’s side: Adrian Przyborek scored the decisive goal in the 117th minute to set the final score at 2–1. Regular time had ended in a 1–1 draw.
Armenia international midfielder Vahan Bichakhchyan came on in the 66th minute and significantly improved Legia’s attacking play. After his dangerous shot was deflected for a corner, Piatkowski equalized from the ensuing set piece. Later, Bichakhchyan had several more chances to score against his former club but couldn’t convert them. He played as an attacking midfielder.
Pogoń’s goals were scored by veteran captain Kamil Grosicki and 18-year-old Przyborek, who netted the winner in extra time.
Thus, Legia exits the Polish Cup at an early stage, while Pogoń takes revenge for last season’s final defeat.
