Mikaelyan and Bazeyan reach quarterfinals of 2026 European Boxing Championships

The 2026 European Boxing Championships continued in Sofia on September 21. Three Armenian boxers entered the ring on the day, with two of them claiming victories and advancing to the quarterfinals.

Marat Mikaelyan (75 kg) confidently made it through the Round of 16. The Armenian boxer defeated Greece's Panayiotis Roidos by a unanimous 5-0 decision. Mikaelyan held a clear advantage during the bout and also scored a knockdown against his opponent.

In the quarterfinals, Mikaelyan will face Callum Makin of England. The bout will take place on September 23.

Artur Bazeyan (60 kg) earned another victory for Armenia. In the Round of 16, he comfortably defeated Italy's Giuseppe Canonico, also winning by unanimous decision — 5-0.

Bazeyan's next opponent will be Alen Rustemovski of North Macedonia. Their quarterfinal bout is scheduled for September 23.

As a result, Armenia now has five representatives in the quarterfinals of the European Championships. Elida Kocharyan (65 kg), Rudolf Garboyan (50 kg) and Davit Chaloyan (+90 kg) had already secured their places in the last eight.

Meanwhile, Artush Hovhannisyan (80 kg) ended his campaign at the European Championships. In a closely contested Round of 16 bout, the Armenian boxer lost to Ukraine's Pavlo Illiushi.
