Manchester United have officially parted ways with head coach Ruben Amorim. The 40-year-old Portuguese specialist leaves the club after 14 months in charge, with the decision taking immediate effect. According to English sources, the dismissal was caused by a serious breakdown in relations between the coach and the club’s board.
Amorim’s final match in charge of the Red Devils was a 1–1 draw against Leeds United on Sunday. After 20 Premier League matches, United sit only sixth in the table, a position that falls short of the club’s ambitions.
Following the game against Leeds, Amorim effectively highlighted the depth of the conflict with United’s hierarchy:
“I came to Manchester United to be a manager, not just a coach. I don’t want to talk about the transfer budget, but the situation looks unfavourable. It seems the board does not want to sign top-level players,” the Portuguese coach stated.
Until the end of the season, the team will be led by 41-year-old Darren Fletcher. The former United midfielder, who played for the club from 2002 to 2015, has recently been working with the Under-18 side. His debut as interim head coach is expected on Wednesday in an away match against Burnley. The appointment of a permanent manager is likely to be postponed until the summer.
Amorim’s dismissal is already the second major managerial change in the Premier League since the start of 2026. Earlier, London side Chelsea sacked Enzo Maresca, highlighting the growing pressure within England’s top clubs amid inconsistent results.
