Today, January 21, the UEFA Futsal EURO-2026 kicked off in Riga. In the second match of the day, tournament hosts Latvia produced a surprising and convincing victory over Georgia, who had comfortably qualified and were considered the favourites.
From the opening minutes, the Latvian team imposed a high tempo and fully controlled the game, leaving their opponents with no chances. The match ended in a dominant 4–0 win. Germans Matushenko opened the scoring in the 2nd minute, while Edgars Tarakanovs scored a brace (24’, 26’). Andejs Baklanovs sealed the result.
Edgars Tarakanovs was named Man of the Match by UEFA’s technical observers. Experts highlighted his energy, leadership, defensive discipline and constant attacking threat, which gave Latvia a decisive advantage.
In the other Group A match, France and Croatia played out a 2–2 draw. As a result, after the first round Latvia lead the group standings alone with three points.
This victory was historic for Latvia — their first ever win in the final stage of a UEFA tournament. The hosts displayed a tactically mature performance and excellent team chemistry.
