Cristiano Ronaldo will be eligible to take part in Portugal’s opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The forward has served his one-match suspension, issued for a red card in the qualifier against Ireland — a penalty he completed during the November 16 match against Armenia, which Portugal won 9–1.
Initially, FIFA’s disciplinary committee handed Ronaldo a harsher punishment — a three-match ban. However, two matches were suspended, reducing the final sanction to just one game. As a result, Portugal’s captain will be available to the coaching staff from the first round of the tournament.
By contrast, Armenia’s captain Tigran Barseghyan received a full three-match ban for a similar offense, without any suspended sanctions, and will be forced to miss all three games — two of which have already been played.
The incident involving Ronaldo took place in the 61st minute of the World Cup 2026 qualifier against Ireland. At that moment, Portugal were trailing 0–2, and Ronaldo struck defender Dara O’Shea in the back with his elbow. The referee immediately issued a straight red card.
Had the maximum penalty been upheld — three matches without suspension — Ronaldo would have missed both opening rounds of the upcoming World Cup.
