Canada beat South Africa to reach the World Cup 2026 Round of 16

Canada have reached the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating South Africa in the opening match of the knockout stage.

The match in Los Angeles ended 1-0. The first game of the Round of 32 did not go to extra time, but it delivered a tense contest and a dramatic finish in stoppage time.

Stephen Eustaquio became Canada’s hero. After a headed clearance from the penalty area, the midfielder was first to the loose ball on the edge of the box and struck it first time. His shot found the bottom corner, leaving South Africa goalkeeper Williams with no chance.

Canada created the better chances throughout the match but struggled for a long time to turn their advantage into a goal. South Africa also produced a strong performance and kept their hopes of forcing extra time alive until the final minutes.

Another major moment was Alphonso Davies’ World Cup 2026 debut. The defender came on in the 75th minute for Tajon Buchanan to loud applause from the Canadian supporters. Notably, Davies became the 1,000th player to make an appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

For both teams, this was a historic match: South Africa and Canada were both playing in the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time. It is Canada who will continue their tournament journey.
