Spain thrash Saudi Arabia to move top of their World Cup 2026 group

Spain claimed their first victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In the second round of the group stage, Luis de la Fuente’s side produced a commanding 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia.

After a surprising goalless draw against Cape Verde in their opening match, Spain needed a strong response to regain control of their position in the group. La Roja effectively settled the outcome of the game in the first half.

Lamine Yamal opened the scoring in the 10th minute, marking his return to the starting line-up with an immediate impact. Eleven minutes later, Mikel Oyarzabal doubled Spain’s lead, before completing his brace in the 24th minute. By the first hydration break, Spain were already in full control with a 3-0 advantage.

Oyarzabal came close to completing a first-half hat-trick, first clipping the top of the crossbar with an audacious effort and then sending another shot narrowly wide. Even after both goalscorers were substituted at half-time, Spain continued to dominate after the break.

The final score was set in the 49th minute after an own goal by Hassan Al-Tambakti. The Saudi Arabia defender turned the ball into his own net after Mohammed Al-Owais had saved Marc Cucurella’s volley.

The win takes Spain to 4 points after two matches. Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde all have one point each.

Spain will face Uruguay in the final round of the group stage. A draw will be enough for La Roja to secure a place in the knockout stage. Saudi Arabia will take on Cape Verde in their final group match as they look to keep their hopes of progressing alive.
