Ireland snatch draw with Hungary ahead of Yerevan visit

Ireland’s national team rescued a draw in the final minutes of their home match against Hungary (2–2) in the first round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Group F, where Armenia and Portugal also compete.

By the 15th minute, the Hungarians were already 2–0 up thanks to goals from Barnabás Varga and Roland Sallai. However, the hosts didn’t give up: Evan Ferguson scored early in the second half, and in added time Adam Idah, assisted by Ryan Manning, secured a draw. From the 52nd minute, Ireland had a numerical advantage after Sallai was sent off.

Ireland – Hungary 2–2
Goals: Varga (2), Sallai (15) – Ferguson (49), Idah (90+3).
Red card: Sallai (52, Hungary).

After conceding two quick goals, Ireland took full control, registering 23 shots on goal, and were rewarded in the very last moments of the match.

Meanwhile, in the other group match, Portugal crushed Armenia 5–0.

The second round will take place on September 9: Armenia will host Ireland in Yerevan (20:00 local time), while Hungary will face Portugal at home.

Armenia will play Hungary on October 11.
