Excelsior midfielder Irakli Yegoian has received his first call-up to the senior Georgia national team. The player has been included in Willy Sagnol’s squad for the June friendly matches against Romania and Bahrain.
This call-up marks an important step in Yegoian’s career. He previously represented Georgia at youth level but had not yet been invited to the senior national team.
There had also been interest in the player from Armenia. Armenia head coach Yeghishe Melikyan had earlier stated that he was considering calling up the Excelsior midfielder. Yegoian has Armenian roots and was regarded as a potential candidate for the Armenian national team, but Georgia’s coaching staff acted more decisively in this matter.
This season in the Eredivisie, Irakli Yegoian played 31 matches for Excelsior, scoring 5 goals and providing 2 assists. The central midfielder has been one of the notable players for his club in the Dutch league.
Yegoian will now have the opportunity to prove himself at senior international level. The June friendlies against Romania and Bahrain could become his first matches for Georgia’s national team.
