Milan’s Inter faced defending champions Napoli away in the 8th round of Serie A. Before this game, the teams had very different results in the Champions League: Inter crushed Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise 4–0, while Napoli suffered a shocking 2–6 defeat to PSV.
In Serie A, the Neapolitans managed to bounce back from their European failure. In the first half, the referee awarded a penalty. In the 33rd minute, Kevin De Bruyne converted it after Mkhitaryan fouled Di Lorenzo — a controversial episode after which the Armenian midfielder was injured and had to leave the pitch.
In the 54th minute, Scott McTominay doubled Napoli’s lead, but four minutes later Hakan Çalhanoğlu pulled one back from the spot. Inter pushed for an equalizer, yet in the final minutes Zambo Anguissa sealed the win with Napoli’s third goal.
The match ended 3–1 in favor of the hosts.
With this victory, Napoli climbed to first place in the Serie A table with 18 points. Milan are second (17), and Inter are fourth (15).
