Undefeated Armenian heavyweight Gurgen Hovhannisyan (9-0, 8 KOs) scored the biggest victory of his professional career on July 19. At a boxing event in Orlando, he confidently dismantled American Chris Thomas (15-2-2, 10 KOs), winning by technical knockout in the third round and claiming the WBA Continental heavyweight title.
The 27-year-old Armenian, known as “Big Gugo,” gave his opponent no chance. He knocked Thomas down in each of the three rounds, and after the third, the referee stopped the fight. This marked Hovhannisyan’s ninth win in nine bouts, eight of which ended inside the distance.
Hovhannisyan began his pro career in 2021 after representing Armenia internationally. The Orlando victory earned him his first championship belt and moved him closer to the elite ranks of the global heavyweight division.
