The freestyle wrestler, the representative of Greece in the weight category up to 79 kg Georgios Kugiumtsidis became the world champion and presented his homeland with the first gold medal in the history of the country in freestyle wrestling. In the final, the 23-year-old wrestler defeated American Levi Haines 3-2.
Georgios started the tournament from the 1/16 finals, where he easily defeated the Japanese, winning ahead of schedule. In the 1/8 finals, he also defeated the representative of China ahead of schedule. In the 1/4 finals, he also easily defeated Azerbaijani and one of the favorites, Jabrail Hajiyev, and in the semifinals he defeated Iranian Mohammad Nokhodilarimi. The grid was full of strong opponents, but Georgios was ready for this and went through everything in a quick manner, giving his homeland the first gold of the World Championship in freestyle wrestling.
