Inter Milan and Armenia national team midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has admitted that he is considering retiring from professional football at the end of the current season.
At the pre-match press conference ahead of the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinals against Bayern Munich, the 36-year-old shared his thoughts about the future:
“I might decide to retire at the end of this season. This could be my final season as a player, or maybe I’ll play another one or two years — we’ll see…” said Mkhitaryan.
Despite this statement, the Armenian footballer’s contract with Inter runs until the summer of 2026.
Mkhitaryan also commented on the tense atmosphere surrounding the upcoming match against Bayern. As a reminder, Inter won the first leg 2–1, and the German club later expressed dissatisfaction over what they called excessive celebrations from the Italians.
“It’s going to be a tough match against a very strong team. Bayern said we celebrated too much after the first leg… They can say whatever they want — we know what we did after the match. It’s not true that we threw a big celebration. We simply enjoyed a win on the pitch of a team that rarely loses at home. Now I just want to focus on tomorrow’s match. There’s a lot of talk outside the club, but we don’t want to listen to it — that’s just how the football world is,” Mkhitaryan emphasized.
The second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal between Inter and Bayern will take place on Wednesday, April 16, at the San Siro stadium.
