Gabriel Sargissian Advances to the Round of 16 at the 2025 FIDE World Chess Cup

Grandmaster Gabriel Sargissian has reached the fifth round of the 2025 FIDE World Chess Cup after a confident victory over American GM Awonder Liang (rating 2701), defeating him 2.5:1.5 in their fourth-round match.
Among the 16 players who qualified for the Round of 16, three represent the Armenian chess school: Gabriel Sargissian, Levon Aronian and Samuel Sevian. In the next stage, Sargissian (rating 2624), competing under the Armenian flag, will face Uzbek GM Nodirbek Yakubboev (2689).
Levon Aronian (USA, rating 2722) will meet one of the world’s top players, Indian GM Arjun Erigaisi (2773), while Samuel Sevian (USA, rating 2698) is set to compete against China’s GM Wei Yi (2754).
The top three finishers of the World Cup will qualify for the 2026 Candidates Tournament. The first game of the Round of 16 will begin on November 14 at 13:30 Yerevan time.
Another Armenian player, Shant Sargsyan, was eliminated in the fourth round after losing to Germany’s Frederik Svane in the tiebreaks.
